Silk City Diner is located at 435 Spring Garden St, Philadelphia, PA 19123.
It is kind of a restaurant with multiple personalities. Sometimes it is an innocuous diner, in an old retro diner car built in 1952 that has been restored. Sometimes it is a dance club that plays much loved but forgotten 90′s tunes. Sometimes it is an outdoor restaurant serving brunch from a menu full of 4 star dishes. We chose to go for the brunch, since we had heard really great things. We were not disappointed. Hubby got a southwestern egg dish that was plain delicious. Layered like a lasagna with beans, cheese and tortillas and crowned with eggs. This was like a mexican eggs Benedict. It came with a side of sausage that was just amazing. We liked this so much we are planning on recreating it for Christmas breakfast.
I chose pancakes, as usual. These were filled with cherries and dark chocolate. They were a bit rich for me that morning. I liked them, but wished I had chosen something with eggs. The flavor was very good, the pancakes were perfectly cooked and the flavors melded well. But, I was jealous of my husbands eggs and turkey sausage when I saw his meal.
The exterior of Silk City is interesting. Like I said, there is a retro diner, attached to that is a dance club and then behind is a fenced patio area. There is a lot of mosaic and ironwork that feels weird with the diner, but somehow it works. Its a mix, much like Philadelphia.
Overall, we liked the restaurant. We would get brunch there again, but next time I think I would go for a more substantial meal.
The prices were not outrageous, I did not think. For brunch we were happy with the cost and the portions were good. Overall, I would suggest this diner/club/bar to anyone wanting to get a great meal in a fun city.
